Ask any organisation that deals with homelessness what the biggest contributor to this problem is and you’ll always get a similar answer: housing affordability.
While homelessness is the result of a complex web of issues with many contributing factors, both rental affordability and home ownership affordability are top of the list of causes, closely followed by the lack of options when it comes to community housing. Homelessness groups agree that while there are some good community housing options around there are simply not enough to fulfill the demand.
One organisation, HomeGround, a Melbourne housing service for the homeless, are trying to make a real difference with an innovative new not-for-profit real estate agency.
